Excellent question! The black streaks that are typically on the north side is a algae called "Gleocapsa magma". This algae eats away at the limestone in the shingles, causing damage. To fix this we spray a algicide on the roof to treat any organics living on the roof. The next time it rains it washes off any dead organics left over.
